Guide To Cairo

Bustling streets, ancient treasures, and of course, the pyramids all combine to make Cairo a truly special place. The city has so much to offer that, realistically, it’s impossible to do everything in a short space of time. However, with so much to choose from you can’t fail to enjoy the general atmosphere of the place, regardless of what you actually see or do.

When To Go

Cairo enjoys blazing sunshine for much of the year, especially in the summer months (June to August) when temperatures regularly reach 40C. Winter is also popular and, in terms of temperature, quite manageable (it’s even slightly chilly at night).

Top 5 Things To Do On Your Visit

  • The Pyramids

One of several ‘must sees’ in Cairo, there’s little that can be said to give justice to the Pyramids magnificence. Although hugely popular all year round, they are simply amazing. Every night there’s a superb Sound and Light show that is also worth checking out.

  • Citadel

A massive stone fortress built in the 12th century, the Citadel gives a fascinating glimpse into Egypt’s past. On a clear day, it also offers great views across the city, extending right to the distant pyramids.

  • The Egyptian Museum

Home to King Tut and a large amount of treasure procured from his tomb, The Egyptian Museum is of immense historical importance – so much so that no cameras are allowed into the building and police are on hand to guard some of the artefacts!

  • Sphinx

Probably the joint-most recognisable attraction in Egypt, The Sphinx is just as popular as the pyramids. It’s also equally as impressive. Yes, everybody’s seen pictures of it, but once you’ve actually witnessed its commanding, almost brutal beauty in person you won’t be disappointed.

  • Khan Ali-Kalili

Cairo’s biggest open-air market, much of Khan’s physical structure and selling techniques don’t differ from the way things were in the 14th century. Be prepared to haggle your way through people selling jewellery, spices, souvenirs and foods.
